EDUCATIONAL STORYBOARDING FOR INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN AND eLEARNING

Educational storyboarding is a tool for instructional designers and eLearning that provides a foundation for planning and creating effective educational materials. The process of creating a storyboard includes creating the basic elements of an eLearning lesson or course that serves as an educational tool and creative guide to help instructional designers construct an effective lesson or course.

Educational storyboarding consists of a series of steps:
Analyzing learners' needs.
Determining instructional goals
Designing objectives and content
Using instructional strategies
Content delivery
Through the analysis of a learner's needs, instructional designers are required to understand the educational context and gain insights about learners, involving research of the target audience, for determining the levels of knowledge, and developing learner profiles. Understanding the desired outcome of the instruction is the next step, and after this is establishing instructional designs of learning objectives that define what the learner should be able to do after the lesson is complete. Sequencing content means to decide the order in which information and activities will be presented.

Once the goals, objectives, and content have been established instructional designers must find the instructional strategies they will use, such as activities. Finally, they decide on how they will assess learners’ knowledge. When these elements are identified and planned out, the storyboard provides instructional designers with an overall structure and plan. It is then used to help organize the lesson or course in an engaging way. The storyboard allows the designer to brainstorm, visualize, and ensure that content is presented in the best way for learning.

Educational storyboarding can save time in the development process because it enables designers to clearly see and define their lesson before designing it. Storyboards provide instructional designers with the framework needed to deliver effective educational materials. With storyboarding, designers are better equipped to create efficient, interactive, and effective courses and lessons that are sure to engage learners.
